The Indian government has recently introduced an initiative called the PM Surya Ghar Yojana or the Free Electricity Scheme. The aim of this scheme is to provide free electricity to one crore (10 million) households by installing rooftop solar power systems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the scheme, named ‘PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme’, offering up to 300 units of free electricity every month. The Prime Minister discussed details of this scheme on the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). Under this scheme, households will be able to get free electricity up to 300 units per month through the rooftop solar systems installed by the government.

How to Apply Online for PM Surya Ghar Yojana :
- Access the official website “pmsuryaghar.gov.in”
- Start the registration process
- Choose your state and the electricity distribution company servicing your area
- Enter your electricity customer account number, email address, and mobile phone number
- Log in using your mobile number and customer number, then submit an application for installation of a rooftop solar system
- Upon approval, engage approved and registered solar vendors working with your electricity distribution company to carry out the installation
- Provide details about the installed rooftop solar system and apply to get a net meter installed
- After inspection by the power distribution company (DISCOM) and installation of the net meter, generate a commissioning certificate from the website’s portal
- Submit your bank account information and a cancelled cheque on the portal
- You will receive the applicable subsidy amount directly into your provided bank account within 30 days
Eligibility Criteria :
If you are a citizen of India and you want to get free electricity facility under PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2024, then you must have certain eligibility for it. Please note that only permanent residents of India can apply for this scheme. Apart from this, the annual income of the applicant’s family should not exceed Rs 150,000.
